“Shall we go dancing after this?” Egan asked. His question was normal, and if the tone of it was deep and husky, there was nothing he could do about it.

Every time Bliss took a bite of something new, her eyelashes fluttered, and he felt each little flutter deep in his belly. He was on the edge, tormented by thoughts of dragging his mate out of the restaurant to feast on her instead.

She had him so damn hot it was a wonder he didn’t set the tablecloth on fire.

He was fighting a losing battle with his vulfen instincts and his iron control as a warrior. From moment to moment he couldn’t say for sure that he was winning but he was damned sure there must be claw puncture marks on the underside of the table.

It pleased his wolf so much to see his mate enjoying her food. Though his cock was hard and ready, he was strangely content to wait and watch his beautiful mate eating. That was the only reason they were still eating and not already in his bed. It was very much a part of their first mating ritual, for the vulfen male to hand feed his female, but Egan hadn’t realized how powerful the feelings would be.

It was a good thing the waiters were experienced with vulfen aggression and kept well back from Bliss when they delivered the courses. Even though Egan knew most of them, when another male got too near to his unclaimed mate, his wolf surged forward.

He was under control, but he knew that his eyes were glowing and his fangs were just a bit too pointy. It didn’t seem that sweet Bliss or the nearby diners noticed any great difference, but he felt it. His female was unclaimed and he was an inch away from blast off.

A human male ushered his female past their table, and Egan couldn’t help but glance to see if the male’s eyes rested too long on Bliss. Luckily, the human smiled then looked away. Egan relaxed.

“No,” Bliss said, and Egan looked into her eyes, startled by the refusal.

No?

His wolf stilled, hunting quiet.

“Is this date over?” he asked slowly. If Bliss said the date was over, he would take her home and let it end, but it would just about kill his wolf to do it. Letting his pretty young mate walk away was not on man or wolf’s agenda for the night.

Pleasuring her and wallowing in her scent, yes. Letting her go home to a lonely bed, no.

“No, no, I don’t mean no. But—” Her cheeks flushed an adorable deep pink. “I want to—I don’t want to dance. I want—” She stopped with a quick glance at the waiter walking past. She pressed her lips together.

Egan waited, but she did not continue. He reached across the table and took her hand in his, stroking his thumb over the soft skin of her wrist.

“Anything you want,” he said in a low tone. He meant it.

If his wolf kept him up all night in a fever of need, so be it.
